What is knee replacement؟

Knee arthroplasty, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces the articulation of the hip and legs in the knee joint with an artificial surface. The most important goal of replacing the knee joint is to eliminate the pain created on the knee due to rubbing and arthritis, rheumatism, or joint destruction. Getting the optimal range of motion in the knee joint and correcting deformations on the knee is another use of the knee joint.

When knee articular cartilage is destroyed for any cause, the joint movement is painful and the joint is suffering from dryness and movement constraints. In this situation it is possible to improve the joint movements and eliminate the pain by replacing the articular surfaces. Knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful surgical procedures. In most cases, the knee joint is more than 20 years old.

Knee replacement surgery is most commonly used in the elderly and middle-aged, but nowadays, using artificial joints is better and newer surgical techniques can be performed at young ages and even adolescents. The age of the patient, his or her weight or gender is not the determining factor in the decision to perform surgery, and the most important factor in determining the severity of the patient’s pain and the disability that caused the pain for the patient’s life. Al-Banna should take into account the fact that in obese people the risk of infection after surgery is 3 times and the likelihood of splicing is 1.5 times that of normal people.

Although it may seem that doing knee replacement surgery at an early age forces one another to re-articulate at an older age, but studies have shown that the sooner this surgery is performed, the result is to eliminate it. Joint pain and stiffness will be better.

The following points are important in decision making for surgery

Does pain and movement constraints reduce the patient’s ability to do things everyday, such as walking, climbing, riding and sitting on the chair?
Is there pain at rest too
Does swelling of the knee with the medication do not disappear or the patient does not tolerate the medicine
Has the knee appearance changed a lot?
Does the drug no longer can kill the pain of the knee

If the answer to the above questions is positive, the patient most likely to undergo knee replacement surgery.

The most important diseases that damage the knee joint to a degree that requires joint replacement are:

Arthritis and knee joint stiffness, which usually develops and develops at an advanced age. The knee osteoarthritis begins with the destruction of the joint cartilage and ultimately leads to bone deterioration
Joint rheumatoid arthritis, which also affects the knee cartilage and ultimately damage the joint bone.
It’s bad to swing or not to bite intra-articular fractures, which, after several years, cause stiffness and damage to the joint.
To perform knee replacement surgery, the surgeon’s physician, with the incisions at the lower level of the femur and upper tibia (tibia), removes the articular cartilage and a small amount of bone from these areas, then place the metal parts in their place and they With a special substance known as bone cement to the bone bed. Then put a sturdy plastic piece of plastic between these two pieces of metal.

Thus, the thigh and coarse bones can move easily and painlessly. During the knee replacement, the surgeon performs bone grafts in a way that corrects deformation and knee deviation
