Acute Phase Meniscus Tear Treatment
For all types of meniscus injuries, the first step is protective treatment, including rest, activity reduction, ice therapy, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
During the acute phase, physiotherapy based on the individual’s age, activity level, injury type and severity, and symptom duration helps reduce joint effusion, prevent muscle atrophy, alleviate discomfort, and improve range of motion while preserving joint proprioception.
Tears smaller than 1 cm and located in the vascular peripheral region of the meniscus with a longitudinal tear type may heal without surgery through conservative treatment.
Important Note:
MRI grading is not a criterion for determining surgical indications; the primary criterion is clinical symptoms and the patient’s issues.
