Do the Knee Menisci Have Blood Supply and Nerves?
Knee menisci are divided into three vascular zones from the periphery toward the center: the red zone, red-white zone, and white zone.
Except for the peripheral region, most parts of the menisci are avascular and receive nutrition through diffusion from the synovial fluid. Approximately 10–30% of the outer margin of the lateral meniscus and 10–25% of the medial meniscus margin have a blood supply.
Meniscal nerves follow the blood vessels, with the highest nerve density found in the anterior and posterior horns, playing an important role in proprioception and pain sensation.
